KS1 – Survival Day – Forest School – 9.6.26

Today, in their sessions, pupils in KS1 have been applying their skills and knowledge built up over the past few sessions with Mr Gamble in order to ‘survive’ in the wild. First of all, children organised themselves into teams and were challenged to survive the wilderness by remembering the rule of 3 – shelter, water, food in that order. Teams had to use their knowledge of dens to construct either an A-Frame, Tepee or Lean-To which could fit the entire team inside to shelter them from the elements. Once completed, children then had to move onto the next challenge which was filtering dirty water using loose parts and cloth. Drawing on their previous sessions, children quickly remembered the best techniques and strategies to make the water come out cleaner than when it went in! If teams had successfully completed both survival tasks, then they moved onto the final one in the canopy where there was a fire going. Safely, children had to add a stick to the fire using the correct technique before cooking popcorn in a pan over the open fire to ensure they had completed the three things required to survive in the wild – shelter, water and food! Although not all the groups would hae survived, the children were able to discuss where things had gone wrong and clearly explain what they would do differently next time – a great skill to have and a BIG well done to all the teams who survived their wilderness experience!
