LKS2 – Classes 5, 6 and 7 – Newsletter

LKS2 have had a week bursting with lots of exciting activities! On Monday, the children got to express their creativity skills with music, P.E. and art.
This week in maths, Miss Evans’ class leapt into learning about fractions! The children have done a lot of drawing, colouring and practical work to get to grips with fractions, and understand exactly what the numerator and the denominator mean. We also began looking at how fractions with the same denominator can be added together to make one whole.

Miss Boyd’s class have also been learning about fractions and have progressed onto learning how to find equivalent fractions and how to calculate fractions of amounts.

On the afternoons this week, LKS2 have been improving their French skills by learning and understanding how to say classroom instructions.

We have also taken part in a Mindmate lesson all about strong emotions and how to handle anger. Pupils ranked numerous feelings into order depending on how strong they thought that emotion was. After discussing their findings, pupils learnt that it is okay to feel anger and discussed ways to manage and cope with it. Finally, the pupils enjoyed listening to a mindfulness listening track aimed at improving mental health and well-being.

To end the week, each class had a special visitor from the University who delivered an exclusive science lesson on sound. The children learnt all about the different pitch in sound and how molecules and vibrations make various sounds. In Miss Boyd’s class, the children then had the opportunity to use a variety of different musical instruments (such as an electric guitar, a xylophone and a drum) and homemade sound instruments (such as a coat hanger with string, a slinky with string and string connected to plastic cups) to find how distinctive and uncommon sounds can be made.
