LKS2 – Fire Lays – Forest School – 17.9.26

Today, pupils in LKS2 built upon their first session last week on how to use flints to make sparks by being introduced to fire lighting. Mimicking our Stone Age ancestors, pupils had the opportunity to use flint to create a spark and learnt about a wide variety of fire lays and how to construct them. They were able to assess some example ones, explaining why they were effective fire lays or why they wouldn’t work, and learnt about the fire triangle; the three most important elements that a fire needs to burn – heat, oxygen and fuel. Then, groups had to combine all these skills and knowledge to make and start their own fires while observing the safety rules discussed.
