This week in Science, we began our new topic all about rocks. We explored the three main types of rock – sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous – and discovered how each one is formed.

To help us understand the different processes, we made our own rocks using Starburst sweets! We used pressure to represent the formation of sedimentary rocks, pressure and heat to create metamorphic rocks, and heat to demonstrate how igneous rocks are formed.

Alongside our practical investigation, we discussed how we could work scientifically. We thought carefully about how to carry out our experiment safely and fairly, made observations about the changes taking place and compared our results.
