LKS2 – Viking Crafts and Tools – Forest School – 14.5.26

Pupils in LKS2 continued to experience life as a Viking in their Forest School sessions today. Pupils had the choice of weaving, plaiting or braiding material together for different purposes. First, children tried weaving using a loom created on a Y-shaped stick to practice the movement of over/under which is how the Vikings made items of clothing. Second, children could learn or develop their plaiting skills in order to make bracelets and other items of jewellery using string, whittling knives, hand drills, loppers, secateurs and bow saws whilst others took on the challenge of braiding using a trollen craft wheel. Using a wheel with eight cuts made into it, children braided seven different pieces of coloured material together following a technique in order to create a braided item. Pupils could also use the tools to cut and shape wood to create Viking weapons, using string to fix their pieces of wood together. A great day full of creativity, imagination, perseverance and trying new skills – all important life skills for school and beyond!
