Climate experts say that tackling food waste is one of the most important things we can do to help the planet. So to get children engaged with the food waste movement, we’re inviting them to enter our Save the Food Poetry Competition. Judged by an awesome panel including UK Food Waste Champion, Ben Elliot, and sustainable food advocate Melissa Hemsley, the competition has the support of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Their poem has to be about food waste

Entrants could submit a rhyming set of instructions relaying the best tip for using up stale bread, a haiku that describes their favourite way to fight food waste, or a couplet that simply emphasises how silly the food waste problem is. The best poems will be those that balance a good knowledge of the food waste issue with clever creativity.

There aren’t many other rules
Just that:
  • The competition is open to all primary school pupils (age 11 and under)
  • All entrants must be from within the UK
  • The poem has to be no longer than 16 lines
  • Entries will be accepted up until midnight on Thursday, May 7th

And that:

  • The winner will receive a £100 book voucher for personal use, a £200 book voucher for their school library, and a food waste fighting pack.
  • The two runners up will each receive £50 in book vouchers.
  • Jamie Crummie, co-founder of Too Good To Go (UK), will also come and do a fun food-waste-fighting workshop at the schools of the three winning children.

The winner and two runners up will be announced in May 2020.
