UKS2 – Fire Lays – Forest School
Autumn has truly arrived! Pupils in UKS2 sheltered from the worst of the weather in our canopy classroom where they revisited fire lays as an introduction to our series of lessons on outdoor cooking. We teach pupils six different types of fire lays as each has a different purpose and are used for different scenarios – for example to start a fire in a fire pit, kelly kettle base, on the floor or if the base is wet. Children worked in groups to build all six fire lays on different bases, recapping learning from last year. Teams then had to choose a base and the best suited fire lay to set alight to see if they could successfully create the building blocks needed for a good fire to cook on. Lots of the groups managed this and we discussed where others went wrong as part of our review to enable those groups to achieve next time. A great start to our fire sessions UKS2!
