UKS2 – Newsletter – 09.05.25

What a brilliant week it has been in UKS2!

Today, the children had maths outside. They used base ten to work out percentage equivalents for 1/2, 1/4, 1/5, 1/10 and 1/25. They then played games to get these facts into their instant recall. They wrote down a value on their whiteboards and had to find their equivalence-partners. They write two values on either side of their whiteboard and played dominoes in groups.

This week, our school has come together to mark a very special occasion – the 80th anniversary of VE Day. VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, is celebrated on May 8th and marks the end of World War II in Europe in 1945. It’s a time to remember the bravery and sacrifices of those who lived through the war and to reflect on the importance of peace and unity.

As part of our learning across the school, pupils from all year groups have taken part in activities to help them understand the significance of this historical event. From storytelling and history lessons to discussions about the lives of people during the war, children have shown great curiosity and respect for this important part of our past. To commemorate the occasion, every child has had a go at designing and making their very own piece of VE Day bunting. These beautiful, thoughtful creations are now proudly displayed throughout the school, creating a vibrant tribute to mark 80 years since this momentous day. The bunting serves as a reminder of the importance of remembrance, resilience, and community spirit.

In part of this week’s science lesson, we used magnifying glasses to closely inspect tulips and explore their structure. We carefully identified and observed the male and female reproductive parts of the flower, such as the stamens (anthers and filaments) and the pistil (stigma, style, and ovary). We deepened our understanding of plant reproduction through direct observation and discussion.

We hope you have a fantastic weekend and enjoy the sunshine!
