UKS2 – Tools – Forest School

On a chilly yet dry day, UKS2 spent their Forest School sessions recapping tool use, purpose and safety in order to create a range of differently sized pieces of firewood. Children could use secateurs to cut thin sticks up into smaller pieces for fire lays, use loppers to cut larger sticks into bigger pieces of firewood or use the bow saw to cut up more substantial branches and logs for larger fires. The final tool children could use was a whittling knife to make bark shavings for kindling and tinder for the initial fire lighting process. All the children were exceptional today and, with their secure understanding of safety and tool use, were able to problem solve, choose the correct tool for the job and make a lot of firewood for a future session. One small team of Year 6 pupils even managed to cut 73 pieces of wood using a bow saw!
