Wellbeing Forest School – 20.5.26
A key concept of Forest School is child-learning learning, both within a session and in pupils planning and designing sessions. Today, both groups had great fun participating in sessions they all asked for last week. The younger pupils spent time with Nigel, our school goat. Children learnt more about him and how to look after him. We checked his feet, his teeth and eyes and gave him a really good hair brush to help him lose his winter coat now the weather is warming up. As he was so well behaved, pupils got to take Nigel out for a walk around our school field where communication and teamwork skills were needed to lead Nigel the right way, scoop up any presents he left and return him safely to his enclosure. Last week, the older pupils requested hot chocolate and that’s exactly what they had to do – make their own using a Kelly Kettle! Children had to build on their fire lighting skills from last session and create a suitable fire lay for a Kelly Kettle base, which wasn’t easy and lots of determination and problem solving was needed. Observing the safety rules and once their fire was large enough, children added the kettle then fed the fire from the top, carefully observing the water for signs of it bubbling and boiling. Once this happened, children got to enjoy a delicious cup of hot chocolate.
