Wellbeing Wednesday – Forest School

What a lovely morning we have had at Lilac Farm in Collingham with Fiona who taught us how to make the most delicious apple and pear juice we have ever tasted! First of all, we unloaded the crates of apples and pears which had been kindly donated by parents and harvested from our fruit trees on school site and quality assured them, removing any which had become mouldy. Next, we learnt how the fruit had to be milled and watched as Fiona explained how the milling machine worked before we loaded our fruit into the mill. We watched as it emerged at the bottom off chopped and chewed up before collecting the bucket and taking it over to the apple press machine. Using the traditional method of apple pressing, we learnt and had a god at layering the apples and pears onto the press before rotating the handle to press down on the fruit. It was exciting to see the juice flowing out of the bottom and we collected some fresh juice to taste. The rest was sent off to be pasteurised before we bring them back to school.
