Over the Spring term, Miss Bourne’s Maths class have been working hard on their formal multiplication and division method. First, we  spent a couple of days reminding ourselves of our 3, 4 and 8 timetables. Then we used multilink cubes to explore repeated addition to multiply a 2 digit x 1 digit number. When we understood the concept of reapeated addition and regrouping, we used visual representations to help us multiply. Then, we applied our learning to the formal method using numbers.

After we were more confident with multiplication, we moved onto division. We began with using numicon to help us understand the concept of making groups. Then we used the numicon to help us with regrouping tens into the ones place value. As the week went on, they replaced the numicon with visual representations. They are now working hard on using only numbers and our times table knowledge to help us complete our formal division.
