Year 3 – Grow to School Garden Project
On Friday, Year 3 took part in their second session with Grow to School. In it, they carried out some weeding of the new growing beds they created last time as well as planting garlic, broad beans and transplanting more winter lettuce into the beds. Children also learnt about compost and how to make leaf mould -a crumbly, earthy type of compost which takes two years to make- from all the fallen leaves at this time of year before the children set about collecting as many leaves as they could to begin the process. Pupils also learnt about which animals were ‘pals’ for a vegetable garden and which were ‘pests’ through playing a sorting game. Finally, as part of each session, we finish with a science task which links to our science topic and the vegetable garden. This time, children learnt about the water cycle and created their own versions using sticks, leaves, dirt, stones and sand to create mini landscapes which included ponds and trees! We added some grass seed in to see if our water cycle will help it to grow! Fingers crossed!
