Year 3 – Grow2School – 18/9/26

Last week, pupils in Year 3 enjoyed a fantastic day in our allotment area with Grow2School. Before diving into harvesting and planting, pupils learnt how important the soil is for growing food with a science experiment testing the permeability of different soil types. Children tested how quickly water seeped through sandy and stony soil, as well as compost and regular soil. They were fascinated by what they discovered and were able to discuss why soil permeability was crucial for growing – we want the soil type that lets water pass through as slowly as possible in order for it to be retained in the soil for the crops to access it over time. After the experiment was completed, pupils spent time weeding, harvesting, preparing beds for new crops and then sowing and planting new crops, such as winter lettuces, mizuna and kale.
