Year 4 – Flint and Steel – Forest School – 10.9.26

To help kick start our new topic of ‘Stone Age,’ pupils in Year 4 began learning how our ancient ancestors used flint to make fire. After discussing the uses and dangers of fire and why and how Stone Age people used and harnessed it, pupils had a go at hitting pieces of flint together and giving it a smell! The children were amazed to find they could smell fire and smoke coming from the flint. Next, children reminded themselves on how to use modern flint and steels to create sparks by talking Mr Gamble through a practical demonstration. Pupils then had to create sparks using a variety of flint and steel (some were a lot harder than others) all the while demonstrating the safety measures needed to use them to keep themselves, their peers and the natural environment safe. If pupils were feeling confident, they could have a go at setting pieces of cotton wool on fire using the flint and steels in preparation for creating fires in the coming weeks.
