Year 6 Group 3 – Little Beck Farm

Today marked the end of Year 6’s visits to Little Beck Farm this Autumn and Group 3 thoroughly loved their day on this smallholding near Masham. A BIG thank you to Farmer ROwan for hosting us over the six days over the past month – she is such an inspiration for the pupils and provides experiences which create life-long memories. Children used apples from the orchard to help Farmer Rowan feed her pigs and learnt all about how she selects which ones to breed, fatten up or sell as well as collecting and learning all about chicken eggs! After that, children visited the farm orchard where they picked a variety of apples and pears including conference, bramley, golden delicious and pippin in order to make fresh fruit juice. In the outdoor classroom, we then chopped, de-seeded, milled and filtered the pulp before tasting the produce which we made. After lunch, children then became butchers and made their own sausages to bring back to school and cook at the fire pit in a future Forest School. Children learnt about the different cuts of meat from a pig and minced them using a machine. It was really tricky to mix in all the ingredients and children got stuck in with their hands to blend them all together – we even substituted some of the water for the apple juice made earlier – so we will taste the difference when it comes to eating! Next, children got to feed the sausage meat into a filling machine and turned the handle to fill the casings, whilst trying to keep them evenly sized. The final part was learning how to twist the casings to create sausages – well done Group 3!
