KS1 – Newsletter – 2.5.25
We hope that you have all been enjoying this glorious weather! It was lovely to be outside for forest schools this week. We have begun our topic on pirates and so the children began to find out their pirate name and choose a pirate crew. They then went on a pirate treasure hunt finding things from their list eg, a feather, a flower, etc…
We have been getting the children prepared and excited for our upcoming trip to Bridlington. Having looked at brochures and leaflets about Bridlington, this week we have been writing and publishing our own. We have used key features such as titles, sub headings, pictures and captions. We included lots of interesting facts about Bridlington and the things you can do there and ensured that we used words with a variety of suffixes. In Phonics, Year One were using the /tch/ sound in witch and patch.
We have been doing lots of counting in 5’s in Year One Maths this week. The children have been ordering and filling in numbers when counting in 5’s a recognising the pattern of how the numbers always end in a 5 or 0. They have also been counting groups of 5 and recording their numbers. One group in Year two have been finalising their work on division. They have been solving division word problems and dividing using bar models. The other group have begun looking at fractions of shapes. They have been recognising and identifying a half, quarter and a third of a shape.
In Geography, we were thinking about which countries are hot and cold. We learnt about the equator and where it is on the globe. We looked at the countries that are around the equator and realised that these countries are the hottest.
As we approach the 80th anniversary of VE day, we discussed this special day together. We thought about what happened in the war and then what happened on VE day. We created some celebratory bunting to be displayed around school for a celebration.
We began a new topic is Science, looking at plants and growing. We learnt about the different parts of a plant and labelled them together. We then cut out different parts of a plant and reconstructed it. We began to think about what each part of the plant’s job is.
Year One looked at stories from Islam about how to treat others in RE. The read the story ‘Be my guest’ about putting other people before yourself. They then read ‘The crying camel’ and talked about how prophet Muhammad taught that Allah created all the animals and we should treat them with kindness and care too. Year Two began looking at how rules are used within religions. They learned about the Ten Commandments which are followed in both the Jewish and Christian faith. They discussed which ones they thought were good and the most important to follow and why.
Year One have been looking at dangers they could face when being out of the house during PSHE. They specifically looked at ‘The Green Cross Code’ and how we use it to cross the road safely. They looked at safe places to cross the road and who they should cross the road with.
Enjoy the Bank Holiday and we will see you all on Tuesday!
