Year 5 – Toffee Apples – Forest School
With Bonfire Night just around the corner, Year 5 used their fire making skills to help make toffee apples at the fire pit. First, teams had to split in half. One half had to peel and skewer their apples and make a delicious mix of brown sugar and a sprinkling of cinnamon for flavouring whilst the remaining members of the team built a fire lay and kept their fire going whilst demonstrating excellent risk management and safety around an open fire. Once fires were hot and big enough, pupils then roasted their apples until they were warm before rolling and covering them in the toffee mix. Once covered, children then returned their apples to the fire to melt the sugary mixture. Finally, teams enjoyed tucking into a delicious treat as we discussed the history of toffee apples and the time of year they are popular.
