Challenge of Champions – Royal Academy of Arts Young Artists’ Summer Show
We would like to let you know that our upcoming Challenge of Champions will look slightly different this time. Instead of the usual format, students are being invited to create one original piece of artwork to be submitted to a national competition run by the Royal Academy of Arts – The Young Artists’ Summer Show. This is an exciting opportunity for UK-based young artists aged 4–18 to share work that truly expresses their own voice.
There is no set theme, and submissions can include a wide range of techniques such as drawing, painting, printing, photography, sculpture, textiles, fashion, animation, video, and more. Judges are looking for imagination, originality, and skill.
Each artist may submit:
-
One piece of artwork
-
A short artist statement or description (no more than 80 words), written in the artist’s own words where possible. Rather than focusing only on the process, students are encouraged to explain why the artwork was created and what it means to them. Please note that if selected, descriptions may be edited by the Royal Academy ahead of display.
As a school, we will submit all entries on behalf of the students. Submissions will consist of a photograph of the artwork along with the written description.
Competition deadline: 27th February
This gives us time to collate and submit all entries.
We will find out by the end of May if any of our students have been successful. If selected, the original artwork will need to be sent to the Royal Academy of Arts in London, so it is very important that all pupils keep their work safe once completed. In addition, we will be selecting in-school winners, who will receive either 50 team points or a reward trip. Previous rewards have included visits to art galleries, drama workshops, and a brunch at Hickory’s.
We would love to see as many entries as possible. We appreciate that the time window is short, but with half-term approaching, this could be a great opportunity for pupils to get creative and produce an incredible one-off piece of artwork.

Thank you for your continued support, and we can’t wait to see what the students create.
