EYFS – Grasslands Farm Trip

What a fantastic couple of days EYFS have had at Grasslands Farm near York. Children met Farmer David who challenged them all to immerse themselves in his farm – to touch, to smell, to try everything and have fun! The children certainly didn’t disappoint him! They began by learning about four different types of crops grown on the farm and what they are all used for before visiting and learning all about the cows, chickens and tractors which are on the farm. After turning into a cow, children were put through the handling system – known as a cattle crush – where they experienced what it was like to be a cow and the farmer, seeing both perspectives. After lunch, we visited some of the fields where wheat and barley were growing and found the pond. We spent the rest of the afternoon pond dipping and exploring the field playing games, making daisy chains, looking for wildlife and completing a task involving maps and phonics. In the pond, we found a wide variety of animals including tadpoles, diving beetles, dragonfly larvae and a water scorpion.
