EYFS – Newsletter – 07/05/26
It’s been a short but action-packed week down in Reception, with lots of farm-inspired goings on! As part of our Let It Grow topic, it was fabulous to be able to visit a real working farm and see crops of wheat and barley in the field and to see newly born chicks and cows and hear about how they grow. In class, we set the children a range of different challenges that were inspired by our visit to Grasslands Farm. The children were presented with a STEM activity to use different resources to build fences to pen in a selection of small-world farm animals and given an opportunity to practise their speaking and listening skills by asking each other questions to discern the location of a small egg hidden beneath animals in a farmyard. We also gave an opportunity to revise the manipulation of 2D shapes we looked at in maths last week to use a range of shapes to make different farm animals. Finally, we presented chance to practise reading skills to colour in a farm animal picture by given written instructions and chance to practise writing by writing a thank you letter to Farmer David of Grasslands Farm.
Phonics sessions this week have allowed the children to further hone their reading and writing skills. Given a phrase or sentence to read, the children were asked to represent what they read by drawing a picture. And after choosing a picture, the children were asked to orally come up with a sentence (or even two or three) and use their phonic knowledge to spell and write it out on their whiteboards.
In Maths this week, we have all had chance to practise solving addition and subtraction problems. The children could select from a range of resources to help them calculate and were encouraged to write number sentences to represent the problem.
The children also really enjoyed a chance to share in some drawing tutorial videos and follow along steps to produce their own drawings of cows and sheep. Take a look at what was produced below!
Have a lovely weekend!
