KS1 – Newsletter – 11.9.26

We have had a great week in Key Stage One and the children are all settling in really well.

We have continued reading and using ‘The Colour Monster’ in English. We have continued to think about our different feelings and what situations make us have those feelings. We wrote poems about this such as ‘I feel happy when…. Because….’ And then we performed our poems at the end of the week for our class.

In Maths, it has been all about place value. Year One have been practising counting and identifying numbers. They have begun to write numbers in different ways and represent numbers using objects. Year Two have been understanding the value of each digit in a two-digit number and showing this through practical and drawn resources.

In our provision afternoons the children have been making a timeline of their life in history and thinking about what they were able to do at each stage of their life. They have thought about ways that we use the internet in computing and what apps they use or know of that other people use. They used grids to guide animals around, using the compass points North, South, East and West in Geography. Finally they completed an experiment for Science, colouring two sides of a paper towel strip with rainbow colours and dipping them both in water to watch as the colour spread to create a bigger rainbow.

In music the children have been learning about body percussion and how to keep a steady beat. Year One have been learning how to collect, handle, store and play different instruments. Year Two have been learning some folk songs and Harvest songs. They were interpreting the music through movement and body percussion.

In food technology, the children were learning rules around cooking. They thought about what resources they may use and how to use them safely. They also discussed hygiene and how to keep the area and themselves clean. They did a simple experiment with water, soap and pepper to see how pepper (germs) can be on the water, but when soap was introduced, it moves away.

The children were discovering and exploring tools in design technology. They were introduced to things like hammers and looked at how to hold them and move about with them safely. They had chance to explore with them and knock nails into wood etc..

Up in the art studio, the children were learning about where all the resources are kept and how to put them away safely. They explored different mark making mediums, to see what they could create and to be adventurous with their artist talents.

We ended the week with our alternative PE. One group had the swords out for fencing, one group were practising their rolling skills, playing bowling games and the other group were playing table tennis.
