LKS2 – Science – Working Scientifically 5 – 24/09/2026
This week in Science, LKS2 carried out a colourful Skittles rainbow experiment!
We began by arranging Skittles around the edge of a plate before carefully pouring water into the middle. We watched closely as the colours began to dissolve and spread towards the centre, creating an amazing rainbow pattern!
Before and during the experiment, we made predictions, shared our observations and asked lots of fantastic scientific questions. We wondered: Would hot water work differently to cold water? What would happen if we left the Skittles for longer? Why did the Skittles eventually turn white? Would we get the same result if we used oil instead of water?
We then tested some of our ideas by changing different factors while thinking carefully about how to keep our investigations fair. We compared our results and discussed how and why they had changed.
This investigation really encouraged us to think like scientists. We didn’t just observe what happened – we asked questions, made predictions, changed variables and used our results to develop even more questions to investigate.
