Children in UKS2 listened to the music of John Adams – A Fast Ride in a Short Machine on BBC Ten Pieces. This is a good example of minimalist music, where patterns repeat with subtle changes over time. Working in pairs, we composed our own ostinato patterns which gradually shifted by changing either the pitch of the note or a part of the rhythm. We all worked within the pentatonic scale, using the notes CDEGA so we could then all play our patterns together as a class ensemble with a steady drone keeping us in time.
