KS1 – Newsletter – 31.1.20

We’ve been working the children hard this week, whilst having lots of fun learning together.

We have been linking Science into our English this week, learning all about the International Space Station and what the astronauts have to do to train to go to the ISS and what they do when they are there. We have been working on statements to explain what life is like on the ISS. Year 1 have been using Beegu to write their own version of the story and to create a story with a similar theme.

Year 2 have been challenged with dividing for the first time this week. They have been sharing out a variety of objects both outdoors and indoors, learning how to draw sharing arrays and to write number families linking multiplication and division. Year 1 have been adding and subtracting using a variety of resources and using bar models, numberlines and whole-part-part models.

Mr Kerr has enjoyed being in Key Stage one this week and taking the opportunity to teach each class Science. They have been completing experiments to find out which materials are waterproof and which ones are not.

In Geography we began to learn about keys linked to maps that show symbols for buildings and Geographic features instead of pictures. They were able to link pictures to their symbols and write what they were.

Beebots at the ready, we began to write our own instructions this week. We used the symbols from the top of the Beebots and put them in order to try and write an algorithm to get out Beebot from one star to another. We then tried them out to see if we had all the correct instructions.

In RE Year 1 have begun their unit on ‘Belonging’ and have been thinking about which groups and organisations they belong to. Year 2 have begun their unit on prayer, beginning thinking about what things concern them and who they might talk to about this.
