KS1 – Newsletter – 7.2.20

This week is Mental Health week and we have been encouraging the children (and the staff) to talk. To share things that are troubling them and to share their problems. We have been focusing on being brave. Thinking about times when we have been brave and about how we could go about being brave. We have recognised that it is good to try new things and not to give up.

We have been linking our History into English this week, learning about the first moon landing and all about Neil Armstrong. Year 2 We have done some ‘Hot seating’, questioning teachers who were pretending to be Neil Armstrong, to find out facts about him that they could include in their fact files. Year 1 have also been learning about Tim Peake and writing their fact files.

Year 2 have continued to focus on division across the week. Drawing arrays, using arrays to be able to write 4 multiplication and division fact families and to use division to answer a variety of reasoning questions. Year 1 have been furthering their knowledge of subtractions, finding a variety of ways to represent this.

In computing we have been using the Space mats to see if we could follow a plan and predict where the Beebot will end up. Once we had made our predictions, we programmed the Beebots using the algorithms and checked if we were correct.

In Geography, we have continued with our map work. Year 2 have been creating maps of towns and developed a key to help people understand what things were. Year 1 were using maps of the playground and using keys to sort equipment into the correct places.

As you may be aware, we now have an electronic system for the library now and all the books children take home are scanned in and out. Therefore, we are able to see which books are going home and how often. The children are allowed to keep a book for up to 2 weeks before it shows as late. If this happens, you will now be sent a message on the app to remind you to return it. If it is not returned within a week, you will receive another message with a fine. We want the children to be taking as many books home as possible to enjoy with you and will change them as frequently as we can.
