LKS2 – Fire Lighting – Forest School

Pupils in LKS2 faced their toughest challenge to date in our fire making sessions given the wet and damp conditions. Having to think of creative ways to keep their fuel and cotton wool drive, teams had to build certain fire lays which naturally help to keep their cotton wool dry and build them quickly before they got too wet. Once again, teams had to grow their fire so that it would be big enough and hot enough to cook Egyptian bread which we are aiming to do next time. If teams succeeded in this challenge, they were allowed to roast and eat marshmallows. At the end of the session, each team reviewed and reflected on what had happened and were incredibly honest and mature in recognising their achievements but also their failures. We discussed the importance of assessing the situation, deciding on a strategy when intervening to help our fire and then solving the problem quickly.
