LKS2 – Newsletter – 14.02.20

We have had a jam packed week in year 3 and 4, exploring our Ancient Egyptian topic, creating canopic jars, building sarcophagus’ and practicing the art of  mummification!

Mr Gamble’s maths class have been learning to multiply and divide whole and decimal numbers by 10 and 100 this week in a variety of contexts. Pupils have been solving missing number questions using the inverse, working out new prices in a shop and playing games involving multiplying and division.

Miss Briscoe’s maths class have turned their attention to data and statistics this week, and have been collecting, presenting and interpreting data using pictograms, bar charts and tables. Pupils thought hard about the data that they collected  and how it could be presented, particularly looking at organisational features such as keys, axis and titles.  Then reflected and evaluated on their work, making suggestions for the future such as, creating the key first before inputting data.

The phase have been investigating algorithms in computing this week using beebots. Pupils had to enter a set of given instructions and spot the mistake. Then, they had to change the algorithm and test it to ensure the beebot made it to the correct destination. Children also had to test and correct sets of algorithms based on drawing shapes accurately.

In science, we furthered our learning on shadows. We had a craft filled lesson where we had to create our own shadow puppets using card, black paper and lollipop sticks. Then, we turned all of the lights off and in groups, acted out our own scene using our shadow puppets, a torch and a white card background. We were flooded with relevant language such as light source, opaque, transparent and translucent and discussed in detail how the shadow puppets are making the shadow onto the card background. We also explored how the distance from the light source (torch) can affect the size and sharpness of the shadow.

We hope you have fantastic half term, LKS2 team.
