LKS2 – Science – Working Scientifically – 12/10/2026

This term, we have been busy becoming scientists! We have been learning what an experiment is and exploring the different steps scientists follow when carrying out an investigation.

We have discussed how to make sure an experiment is a fair test, thought carefully about what we might change and what we need to keep the same, and made our own predictions before finding out what really happens.

We have enjoyed carrying out lots of exciting investigations, including:

  • Making our own lava lamps
  • Testing which objects sink or float
  • Classifying ourselves according to our hair and eye colour
  •  Investigating whether people with longer legs can jump further
  • Testing which materials soak up the most water
  • Carrying out the Skittles experiment and observing what happens when water is added to the sweets

During our Skittles investigation, we also explored what happens when we change certain factors. We made predictions about how changing things such as the temperature of the water might affect our results and then observed what happened. This helped us to understand why scientists sometimes change one thing at a time while keeping everything else the same.

Throughout our Science lessons, the children have had opportunities to ask questions, make predictions, observe carefully, compare results and draw conclusions from what they have discovered.

The children have really enjoyed working scientifically and carrying out their own practical investigations.

We certainly have some budding scientists in LKS2!
