UKS2 – Newsletter – 08/09/23

It has been a superb first week back in UKS2!

On Tuesday, the children in Miss Barnicoat’s class were welcomed back with a range of games and challenges to target their learning from year 4. They were challenged on a variety of subjects within maths, including: times tables, measures, time and place value. They showed an excellent understanding of their previous learning, with added competitive spirit too!

This week in RE, UKS2 revisited their debate skills using opinion corners. After an initial discussion about the different aspects of religion they have been introduced to previously, the children were given this statement: ‘Only people who believe in a God should learn about religion.’.

After some excellent discussion, they were asked to articulate their opinions. Everyone engaged enthusiastically and respectfully in the session and we cannot wait to introduce our topic for the half term: special places and journeys.

Finally, this week in science, UKS2 we introduced our autumn 1 topic of ‘Working scientifically’. Firstly, the children researched and discussed the work of Alexander Fleming and how this has impacted our society. Then, they were challenged to design their own experiment to create mouldy bread. The children discussed the dependent, independent and control variables for their own experiments, then set up their tests using zip lock bags and bread. They will revisit their bread slices in ten days time.

Finally, next week is week 1. On Monday, children need to come to school in their Forest School kits.
