UKS2 – Newsletter – 23/09/2019
Throughout the day during Forest School activities, all of the UKS2 pupils have been developing their geography knowledge and looking at the city states of Greece. Pupils identified a number of them, including Athens, Sparta, Corinth and Syracuse and recreated them using different materials that they found outside. All students were also given the opportunity to recreate a camp that would have been used for hoplites (the most common type of heavily armed foot-soldier in ancient Greece). As the weather improved, Forest School tools were brought out to help construct our own labyrinths.
This week in English, pupils further explored the story of Theseus and the Minotaur. Through role-play they had the opportunity to enter the dark and mysterious labyrinth (a maze containing the Minotaur: half-man and half-bull). Students were asked to use their five senses and experience the treacherous descent Theseus endured.
In maths this week, Miss Barnicoat’s group have had their first carousel including provision. This allowed the pupils to access all the resources in the maths corner to develop their knowledge and understanding of place value. Students worked independently during these sessions and displayed excellent maturity and behaviour. Well done Year 5!
